Carlos’ passion for perfumery began at an early age and was fueled by his father, an acclaimed flavorist. His father would bring home different scents every night and test Carlos as part of a game. Carlos began his perfumery training at IFF in 1985 under the watchful eye of his mentor, Carlos Benaim. As part of his training he spent time in Barcelona, Grasse, and Paris. He joined Givaudan in 1994, where he had the opportunity to travel on a scent trek to the rainforest of Costa Rica. Carlos draws a lot of creative inspiration from this incredible experience. During his nine years at Givaudan, Carlos had great success with brands such as Calvin Klein, Estée Lauder, Proctor & Gamble, Puig, Coty, Christian Dior, Liz Claiborne among others. Prior to Joining Symrise in 2009, he spent three years at both Takasago and Fragrance Resources.
"Go, and catch a falling star,
Get with child a mandrake root,
Tell me, where all past years are,
Or who cleft the Devil's foot."
— John Donne

COMMENTARY: In biblical scripture, mandrake was referred to as ‘the love plant’ and was through to have male fertility enhancing properties. Long used in Wiccan ritual, its roots were thought to emit a fatal, supersonic scream when dug up. Because mandrake actually smells of strong red apple, we gave the fragrance a red fruity heart but grounded it with birch leaf and birch root to suggest the roots of the flower dug into the soil. We also gave the fragrance a sharp aromatic note to suggest its infamous, deadly shriek. Finally 'Deadly Addiction Accord' lends a creamy, gourmand wood quality to pull it all together.
