What are the critics saying about Bloodflower?
"In Bloodflower it is less post dental extraction, more boozy Vampire lite, tempered by Black Sambuca, to smooth the blood into a flickering burgundy stained haze. It’s beautifully handled though, the metallic edge of the blood accord mixes superbly with rose, creating petals of wrought iron and thorns of fire. The amber and patchouli in the base serve to stoke the glow and burn of this weird, compulsive edgy thing. It does smell toxic at moments, when the skin flushes or overheats; I liked that, made me feel oddly alive. I can see Bloodflower being dangerously addictive."
— CA FLEUR BON
"Bloodflower opens with the first syllable, a blood accord. I have always loved the description of the smell of freshly spilled blood as smelling of freshly sheared copper. That imparts the concept of a chilly metallic accord. Mme Carlin assembles just that. The early moments have a clean metallic edge to them, almost like a used scalpel would smell like. The first transformation occurs as the blood changes into a licorice laden mix meant to emulate Sambuca liqueur. As with the top accord Mme Carlin also captures the sugary sweet quality of the liqueur as well as its viscosity as it feels like this oozes over the blood accord. In the base the flower part shows up as a very deep rose is made even deeper with clove and patchouli. This is a Goth black rose to finish upon."
"Bloodflower has enough clove and rose to lend a suitably gothic, but the metal in it is its bracing, guiding force. Smelling it fills me with life, even if I become quickly convinced it’s a life best lived strewn upon a fainting chaise, wan and overflowing with poetic melancholy. It’s not as resolutely bizarre as L* L***’s Another 13 or E**** L*****s Dazzling Silver, but Bloodflower still probably qualifies as an acquired taste. That said, I like to think of fragrances as (among other things) an invitation to a dinner party, and anybody RSVP’ing “yes” to the Bloodflower party is somebody I’m confident I can have good conversation with, even if the party’s thrown by Hannibal Lecter.
