During my recovery from a near-death experience in 2018, I spent countless hours driving through the Catskill Mountains for meditation. One afternoon, speeding up the side of a mountain in my little convertible roadster, something unbelievable happened.
Engine roaring, smell of gasoline vapor in the air, the pull of gravity as I climbed higher, faster when suddenly — for a single micro-instant — I broke through.
Pure white golden light.
In that flash my "cup" filled and I was suddenly brimming with internal warmth and completeness and beaming, positive vitality as though I had been recast entirely from the inside out. It was a feeling of deep spiritual comfort and a knowing that all will be ok, so to not worry. It was so fast, so utterly bizarre and so visceral it left me just completely thunderstruck....and very inspired to create a fragrance based on what I had experienced; this had to be shared.
When your cup is full, you act with courage not to prove something, but because you can. Because you're abundant, not desperate. That's what the Hierophant teaches: you can't pour from an empty cup. But when it's full, you overflow.

Ierofante doesn't unfold like a typical fragrance. It ascends.
Launchpad. You smell it first on the skin: suede and gasoline — the pristine white spacesuit, the freshly fueled rocket, the vapor hanging in anticipation. Nutmeg sparks, psychedelic and strange, the signal that something is shifting. You're at the threshold now.
Ignition. Then the burn begins. Pyrogenated styrax ignites, smoky leather friction builds, frankincense weaves sacred smoke through the heat. You're climbing. The atmosphere peeling away. Higher. Faster. The gasoline fades as the fuel burns away.
Arrival. What's left is golden: amber like light made tangible, cashmeran soft as clouds, vetiver green like the grassy fields of Elysium. Myrrh and benzoin pool beneath — the sacred dessert, bathing in heaven itself.
Perfumer Luca Maffei reversed the traditional fragrance structure. Instead of light to heavy (sinking into the earth or grounding), Ierofante goes heavy to lighter to golden. The trajectory itself is ascent. You don't ground, you lift off.
This is the cup, filled. The starchild, returned. The fullness that makes valor inevitable. This is olfactory initiation.
Valor is fullness expressed.
Frankincense and Neuroplasticity:
Research shows frankincense compounds have neuroprotective effects. A 2016 study found frankincense essential oil increased learning and memory, suggesting effects on neuroplasticity — the brain's ability to form new pathways and adapt.
Myrrh and Grounded Calm:
Myrrh has been used for millennia in spiritual practices for its ability to ground and center. Modern research validates its anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties — creating the calm necessary for courageous action.
Styrax and Sacred States:
Styrax resin has been burned in temples for thousands of years to induce meditative and transcendent states. Its sweet, balsamic smoke signals the shift from ordinary to sacred consciousness.
The Gasoline Accord — Alchemy in Motion:
Gasoline is petroleum — ancient organic matter compressed under extreme pressure into fuel. Literal alchemy: death transformed into power. The scent triggers association with motion, potential energy about to be released.
Valor is fullness expressed.

The perfumes that speak to us most are often those with inherent contradictions. In the case of Ierofante from Parfums Quartana, the contradiction is that it softly explodes.
You’d expect a fragrance with gasoline and smoky notes to be high-key, projecting with incessant force. Instead, this Art and Olfaction Awards winner exhibits a restrained potency which lasts hours….. A convincing gasoline accord, softer than that of Dior Fahrenheit, is brilliantly paired with styrax resin, a natural material that somehow smells plasticine. There’s another contradiction: Ierofante smells both natural and synthesized; designed and incidental…
I think I would have felt this way even if I didn't know about the creative brief behind the perfume. The opening is so unique because it communicates the idea of flame and gasoline and these heavy, highly textured, typically nauseating smells and completely smooths them over, creating a break in expectations that raises the wearer’s own sense of anticipation.
Ierofante stays in that perpetual state of explosive tension for most of the wear. The gas burns off, and the initial smoke-tinged notes fade, but a dark vetiver-tinged amber accord remains.
It's not ruggedly handsome or any other descriptor we usually pull for vetivers or smoke perfumes. It's gentle and suave the whole way through... it just happens to be a little combustible.
